Can you believe it?
Today is the last day of January…
Wow!!!
First thing I think of is…just three more months until my daughter Tori’s wedding!! Yeah!!
You have any “big days” around the corner?
We’ve all got one tomorrow….Wear Red Day!!!
American Heart Association started this ten years ago…
Women and Men asked to wear red, take action…and commit to fighting heart disease..
“Take charge of your own heart health” and what great advice is that.
Wear Red Day has become a big fundraising day. Doesn’t Macys tomorrow give you 20 percent off if you wear red? I think so…plus they sell a pin for $2 and all the money raised goes to fighting heart disease.
A lot has happened since the first Wear Red Day ten years ago.
21% fewer women are dying from heart disease
23% more women are aware that heart disease is our top health threat
There are a lot more guidelines and medications for prevention and treatment
But we need to do so much more….as hundreds of thousands of women still die each year from heart disease…
Oh my goodness….I just joined Pinterest!!!
What will be next?
My daughters love it…especially Victoria who has gotten lots of little ideas for her wedding from it. My girlfriends, like Dana swear by it….
And now…here I come…
May take me awhile to master…..
Yes Facebook did as well….
So will you help me out ?
Can you give me some tips.
What do you pin…and why?
How hooked are you?
And if we pin each other..does that mean we’re going steady?
That was a joke…and boy does that date me?
Sorry…
So where are my Pinterest junkies or are you called followers?
Give me a few “pinters”
It sure does look like fun.
I don’t know about you…But it took me years to figure out what LOL meant. I remember in high school when my daughters now fiancé Matt sent me an e mail or a text with that on the end.I thought he was saying “love you lots” and I thought it was so cute…LOL!!! And every once in a while I’ll see another term on facebook that I have no idea what it means…so I Google it.
Today my friend Jan sent me this list…”texting for seniors”…Now these were right up my alley…..and yes go ahead and share.

Seems like we are really getting hit by the flu bug.. My daughter Christina has been out for 3 days now and when she went to the doctor the other day…they told her she was the 10th official flu diagnosis of the day… You or anyone in your family got it now?
She’s on 2 heavy duty antibiotics and since she had a bronchial thing going as well she’s also on cough medicine with codeine. Im not surprised she got it since she teaches kindergarten…and the Dr. told her even those who got the flu shot are getting it.
And one of the biggest carriers of germs and you touch it all the time your cell phone..
SO thank you AT&T for these tips:”
--Don’t share your cell phone unless it’s an emergency. This is especially important for teens who tend to share phones or parents who let their toddlers play with them.
--Wash your hands frequently.
--Follow your manufacturer’s instructions and clean your cell frequently.
--Use your hands-free headset, minimizing keypad-to-face exposure.
--Don’t use your phone in a restroom.
Both Sam and I have made no secret of the fact we have felt bad for Alex Smith ever since he got replaced by Colin Kaepernick. I came around sooner than Sam did…I mean after all Colin is great.
But I still feel sad every time I see him on the sidelines. I’ve met his darling wife Liz. In fact when I met her she reminded me of how she when 16 living in Morgan Hill she came out to see me at an event….and they’ve got a cute little boy and I heard another one on the day...And I just think Alex has handled himself better than almost anyone else would have. And how has he handled it? You’ve got to read Tim Kawakami’s column today in the Mercury…Why Alex Smith isn’t mad at his predicament…
Alex said he can’t fault Colin because that’s how he himself became the starting quarterback in college. A guy got hurt he stepped in. “So it’d be pretty hypocritical to be about about it. It’s just the nature of team sports.” Later says “he’d be lying if he said it wasn’t a little bittersweet…but at the same time it’s a team sport and these are all my teammates. You go through so much together” “If you can’t be happy for teammates, there’s something wrong with you…and that basically his feelings are secondary.
And if you saw the locker room after the Niners win on Sunday…the first face was Alex Smith who was grinning from ear to ear…As his buddy on the team Joe Staley says high-character guys…yes that’s Alex Smith.
As my Mom would say if she were alive…”That Alex Smith is a “mensch”.
Just how excited are you for the Super Bowl?
I love the Super Bowl so much I actually don’t go to parties
Because I truly want to watch the game….undistracted by people or food.
And this year it’s even more exciting because our beloved Niners are in it!!
I don’t even think if I could buy a ticket for a reasonable amount I would want to go..
But at least that’s not a problems there is no reasonably priced ticket.
The average ticket is $3000…That’s crazy!!!! And a lot of them are going for as much as $10,000…SO before you give-in…LOL….I found this list of questions to ask yourself:
--"Do they have anything in the more affordable $9,000 range?"
--"Can I marry and divorce a millionaire in less than two weeks?"
--"Can I afford it after spending $8,000 on a Pro Bowl ticket?"
--"Isn't this why the rest of the world hates us?"
--"Would it make more sense to watch at home and spend $10 grand on snacks?"
--"Before I spend the money, which team is Harbaugh's dad betting on?"
--"If I've got $10 grand, could I buy, like, the Oakland Raiders?"
--"Will I forever be known as 'The idiot who spent $10,000 on a Super Bowl ticket?'"
If you missed the punch line this morning….
We were talking about couples that sit on the same side of the table at a restaurant.
And I teased….the restaurants hate you!!!
Apparently it’s true… According to anonymous interviews with restaurant staff, people who sit on the same side take longer to eat (gazing into someone’s eyes while you eat slows you down) and they’re more prone to PDA which bothers other restaurant goers.
My solution if this is you…leave a bigger tip. They’ll soon start to love you. LOL!!!
Even more bothersome than the “same siders” issue is the revelation we had that a bagel equals six pieces of bread….might as well have a donut!!!
Did you go into Subway over the weekend with a ruler to see if your foot long was really a foot long or just 11 inches as we found out last week.? Well, if you didn’t hear. Subway finally explained the true size saying a foot long is a descriptive name not a measurement of how long the sub is.
“Yeah, right”….
So here are six other things with names that don’t describe what they really are.
1.) If you buy a TWO-BY-FOUR at the lumber store, it's not really two inches by four inches . . . it's one-and-a-half inches by three-and-a-half inches.
I don’t know about you at work but I get a lot of e mails…Tons of them…
I take a peak at them all, believe it or not, and this one really amazed me. Santa Clara County Supervisor Mike Wasserman’s January newsletter.
The headline is “Numbers Don’t Lie, 2012 was a busy year!!!
- 1 New County Supervisor Elected
- 88 Board and Board Committee Meetings Held
- 517 Foster Children Reunited with their Families
- 635 Miles of Roads Maintained
- 1,170 Animals Placed in Homes from the Animal Shelter
- 9,290 Arrests Made by Office of the Sheriff
- 40,000 Cases Prosecuted by Office of the District Attorney
- 55,000 Hours of Volunteer Work at County Parks
- 833,350 Patient Visits to Valley Medical Center and Clinics
- 972,605 Ballots Counted by the Registrar of Voters
- 2,603,830 Visits to County Parks
Also in 2012, I personally drove 12,000 miles on county business, had over 1,000 meetings, and received 32,000 emails.
And YOU thought your last year was exhausting LOL!!
Got a chuckle out of this today…
Not to be left out of the SAN FRANCISCO 49ers versus ATLANTA Falcons Championship game this Sunday….the cities that host these two teams training facilities have made a bet on the outcome…So we’re talking Santa Clara and Flowery Branch Georgia. And what did they come up with. Flowery Branch is the home of Wrigleys largest plant so when the Niners win….Santa Clara Mayor Jamie Matthews gets a case of Wrigley’s chewing gum. Should the Niners lose…the Mayor in Flowery Branch gets a basket of Peanut characters plush toys and bobbleheads from Great America.
Warning….don’t read on if you’re trying to lose weight…LOL!!!
The food police have just picked their finalists for this year’s Xtreme Eating “Dis-honorees”….restaurant meals that are simply “gut-busting” with too many calories, saturated fat, salt or sugar.
Don’t think any of these will surprise you….
Bistro shrimp pasta from The Cheesecake Factory. This dish of crispy battered shrimp, fresh mushrooms and arugula is tossed with spaghettini in a basil-garlic-lemon cream sauce. It weighs in at 3,120 calories, 89 grams of saturated fat and 1,090 milligrams of sodium, according to CSPI, equal to three lasagna classico entrees and a tiramisu from Olive Garden.
Cheesecake Factory's crispy chicken costoletta was not too far behind. According to the menu, it's a chicken breast lightly breaded and sautéed to a crispy golden brown. It is served with a lemon sauce, mashed potatoes and fresh asparagus.
According to CSPI, it also has 2,610 calories, more than a 12-piece bucket of original recipe Kentucky Fried Chicken, and 4½ days' worth of saturated fat.
Johnny Rockets bacon cheddar double burger, sweet potato fries and Big Apple shake. This meal packs on 3,500 calories, 88 grams of saturated fat -- that's four days' worth -- 3,720 milligrams of sodium and 15 teaspoons of sugar, according to CSPI.
Country fried steak and eggs at the International House of Pancakes, or IHOP, has 1,760 calories, 23 grams of saturated fat, 3,720 milligrams of salt and 11 teaspoons -- nearly two days' worth -- of sugar, CSPI said.
Thank goodness we didn’t see this until the day after.
According to experts….yesterday was the most depressing day of the year…
And this I’m afraid is supposed to be the most depressing week of the year…
Why?
The holiday glow is really over, the weather is freezing cold, night comes early, there is no more vacation to look forward to, and you’ve already blown your New Years Resolutions.
What to do…go for walks during the daytime. Good luck with that…It’s COLD!!!
Eat fruit…
And of course look on the bright side..yesterday was rock bottom and you survived. So if you can make it to Sunday….you’re clear….life will be all sunshine, birds chirping and puppies dancing again!!!
You’re welcome!!!!!
How to get well within 36 hours…?
Aren’t we all suffering with something…a cold, the flu, aches and pains…no voice?
The boss was stunned when he heard me this morning…I’m almost totally back to normal…So here’s what I did…gargled with warm salt water every couple of hours..
Tea with honey (had to go to the neighborhood Starbucks for that) Zinc lozenges (although my Dr. told me he doesn’t think much of those)…oh…and a Drs visit too.
He put me on Azithromycin and told me to buy Robituson (sp) DM or Musinex.
Whatever it was…it worked like magic..,,plus the fact I stayed in out of the cold and missed a day of work!!!
Your co pay by the way is $25…LOL!!!
And keep this in mind….that you need to wash your hands a lot….and for 20 seconds at a time which is like singing two renditions of the Happy Birthday song. Hey sing it in front of others and say “Happy Birthday to me” and maybe you’ll get a present as well as clean hands.
Since this has turned into a medical blog you have any tricks you can share. It will be awhile before we’re done with flu/cold season!!!!
Who comes up with this stuff…
A brewery in Oregon has made a beer for dogs.
Boneyard Brewery (great name) which is in Bend, Oregon
Says its alcohol free…and is a healthy nutritional liquid treat for your best friend..LOL!!!
It can be served on its own, or poured over dog food..
Okay..maybe I can go along with that one…
But this one….no way…
Fran Bailey has the life size faces of her five now deceased cats tattooed on her back. Says she decided to do this to keep her cats with her permanently because always wants to remember them.
Has she ever heard of lockets? http://www.facebook.com/SamVanZandtKBAY

So everyone is asking….How was Thailand?
Yes…it was indeed out of my comfort zone..
But I’m so glad I went. I will say I didn’t see many of the same places Amazing Race always shows. Instead our tour guides…who did speak English by the way, took us through historic Thailand…the poor villages…temple after temple…..and authentic Thai restaurants which is why I ate a lot of rice. The food was my least favorite thing. It certainly doesn’t taste like it does here…LOL!!!
Learned a lot… covered a lot of ground…Bangkok, Phuket, Chaing Mai and Chaing Rai
Thai people…even those who live in poverty…are all so nice…and so happy…and so hospitable. Yes, they would often invite us into their grass shacks. Oh..and the floating market in Bangkok is unbelievable…dozens of boats..if not hundreds… all jammed in a river…drifting by markets that are selling food, souvenirs and local goods. May have been the coolest thing we did!!!
And I fell in love with elephants which are treated like pets….They, in some cases, live a better life than the villagers. There is a lot of beautiful untouched land. We even crossed the border into Myanmar which was very neat.
Came home with lots of pictures…some I posted yesterday, and lots of mosquito bites!!!
And the plane ride you ask? Yes….it is unbelievably long….12 hours to Bejing..and then another 5 to Thailand with a wait in between. Coming home, we were at the Bejing Airport for 8 hours waiting for the connecting flight home. That part of the trip isn’t fun… Final question? Would I go again……Loved it..but NO!!!! (im a Hawaii gal)
