Ever wonder how traditions start?
Here’s the story about Fathers Day….
1909…Sonora Dodd was in church listening to a Mothers Day sermon and decided she wanted a special day to honor her Dad…William Smart . He was a Civil War veteran who lost his wife while she gave birth to their 6th child. So there he was living on a small farm in Washington State raising a newborn and 5 other kids. After Sonora became an adult she realized the selflessness her dad had shown in raising his kids as a single parent and wanted to honor the sacrifices he made. Since he was born in June, she chose to hold her first fathers day celebration in Spokane where she lived…on June 19th, 2010.
President Calvin Coolidge liked the idea….which actually caught on in other countries too….and in 1966, President Johnson signed a Presidential proclamation declaring the third Sunday as June as Fathers Day. President Nixon then signed it into law …making it permanent in 1972…
And sometime between 1909 and 1966…Hallmark jumped on the bandwagon as well!!!
And the rest, of course, is history Happy Fathers Day!!!!
