You're hearing it more often...do we HAVE to start saying "THE" when referring to our freeways? What's wrong with just saying, "101" or "280"?

Ted Kopulos I don't use "highway". I just say the number. "Head east on 280, go south on 17 and then north on 85." Just an example ...

Maria Rosales My daughter asked me the same thing about grades. She said why do you always say "the 6th grade"? LOL!
John Hamilton Lohnes The difference is that is SoCal all the freeways are referred to by name, hence the use of the definite article 'the', as in the Hollywood Freeway, or the San Diego Freeway. Technically, when one refers to a numbered freeway, the definite article should also be used, as the number is the name, as in 'the 880' or 'the 280'. I have noticed a tendency recently of some to drop the use of the definite article in modern speech.

Joe Kelley I always drove 17 like a race course like everybody else in my BMW 2002 Tii,& 3.3 Csi. Oh, I did'nt mention Highway 9! That's the scenic route to Santa Cruz! It was all a blur up there too!
